This 18th-century Tibetan gilt-bronze statue depicts Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, in the elaborate style characteristic of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Adorned with graceful proportions and vibrant gilding, Manjushri radiates an aura of profound wisdom. The unique decoration of the base adds to its artistic and rarity value, making it a must-have collector's piece. Manjushri, revered as the chief among the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, especially during the early proliferation of the Prajnaparamita sutras in Mahayana Buddhism, symbolizes transcendent wisdom. Practitioners must pass through the gate of wisdom to attain Buddhahood, hence Manjushri holds the highest position among Bodhisattvas, embodying the Buddha's wisdom.
The statue features a high, elaborate hair bun adorned with a majestic crown, intricately detailed down to the smallest elements, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. Large floral earrings and flowing hairbands draping over both shoulders complement the overall elegance. Manjushri's broad forehead, serene facial features, slightly downcast eyes, and gentle smile convey compassion and assurance to all sentient beings, inspiring boundless faith and hope.
The proportions of the body are balanced and lifelike, demonstrating the exceptional artistic skill of the period. Adorned with necklaces, chains across the chest, and bracelets on all limbs, the statue exudes grace and elegance. The finely textured skirt gracefully folded inward depicts the natural drape of a monk's robe, enhancing its beauty and generosity.
Seated in the posture of royal ease on a lotus pedestal, with hands forming the teaching gesture (dharmachakra mudra), Manjushri’s presence soothes and uplifts the spirit. Stems with blossoming flowers flank both sides, enhancing the portrayal of vitality. The double-tiered inverted lotus throne beneath features neatly arranged petals, robust and powerful in form, meticulously carved to perfection with symmetrical precision. This statue comes from the private collection of a senior disciple, characterized by its securely mounted base, indicating its historical significance and esteemed provenance.
