In the Qing Dynasty, a gilded-style statue of the Goddess of Auspiciousness, also known as Pandan Lhamo in Tibetan Buddhism, was crafted. The Goddess of Auspiciousness is revered as the most esteemed among female protector deities in Tibetan Buddhism and the only goddess among the Eight Guardians. She presides over matters of destiny and wealth, serving as one of the principal protectors in the Gelugpa sect. As the chief worldly protector among female deities, she holds a prominent position in the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon and is revered as the black protector deity in the Red and Black Protector Deity System of the Dalai Lama and is also considered the guardian deity of the Jokhang Temple and even Lhasa itself.
This statue of the Goddess of Auspiciousness is imposing in size, with thick layers of gilding, reflecting the opulence of gilt work during that era. The sculpture exudes tension, with a fearsome countenance featuring three eyes, tightly knit eyebrows, bared fangs, and hair standing upright like flames, adorned with a crown of five skulls. The intricately carved details vividly capture the ferocious and fierce aspect of the goddess. Adorned with circular earrings and a necklace, the goddess holds a vajra in her right hand and a skull cup in her left, with bare feet firmly planted on a lotus throne, exuding an aura of power as she sits sideways atop a mule, symbolizing her dominion over the three realms. The mule's robust physique and powerful limbs stand firm, while the goddess, with her dignified posture, stands tall on the throne.
The lifelike portrayal and seamless craftsmanship of the statue reflect the highest levels of artistic and technical prowess. With its well-preserved condition and distinctive official style, this statue is truly remarkable and commanding. Its rare subject matter, imposing size, and official style make it an exceptional masterpiece among similar artifacts.
