The Red Hat Karma Kagyu school is one of the reincarnation systems within the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism, passed down from the 14th to the 18th century. This Qing Dynasty paper Thangka depicts the second generation of the Karma Kagyu Red Hat family delivering sermons to Mkhav Spyod Dbang Po. In the scene, Mkhav Spyod Dbang Po is portrayed wearing the iconic Kagyu red hat, holding a Brahma flower in his right hand and a scripture in his left. Surrounding him are the red-hat Kagyu siddhas, all gathered to listen to the Dharma teachings.
Despite the many figures drawn in this Thangka, the depiction remains intricate without being chaotic. The entire painting is masterfully executed, with smooth, precise lines and a fresh, elegant color palette. Particularly notable is the overall composition, which maintains stability and density while incorporating varied elements, creating a strong visual impact. This blend of artistic complexity and balance makes the piece truly exceptional.
