This Tibetan antique depicts White Jambhala, also known as White Mahakala, an embodiment of compassion emanating from Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. He is often depicted riding a dragon, hence also called Dorje Drolö, the Vajra King Riding a Dragon. White Jambhala's practice is specifically aimed at ensuring material wealth for practitioners, accruing immense merits.
The practitioner's cultivation of bodhichitta is foundational, rooted in the great compassion of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, perpetually engaging in formless generosity, caring for the impoverished masses, naturally fulfilling aspirations. This statue of White Jambhala features one face with three eyes and two arms, in a wrathful expression symbolizing compassion for sentient beings across the three realms. Adorned with a five-leafed crown, he holds a wealth-bestowing mongoose in his left hand and a wealth-bestowing jewel-spitting mongoose in his right, symbolizing the aggregation of all wealth deities' merits, capable of alleviating the suffering of the starving. Robust in stature with precise proportions, he is attired in celestial silk garments and adorned with precious jewelry and ornaments, seated atop a dragon, legs crossed in a playful posture.
The dragon's dynamic posture, seemingly aggressive with raised head and tail, is meticulously crafted, down to each scale, illustrating its mythical prowess—dragons symbolize the ocean's depth and harbor treasures like the wish-fulfilling gem, rare in the human realm. Riding a dragon signifies liberation from personal and others' poverty, bringing prosperity to all beings. This statue is of moderate size, originally gilded with mineral pigments, boasting smooth lines and balanced proportions. It exudes an indescribable sense of nobility throughout its form, dynamics, and craftsmanship, making it a rare and exceptionally perfect representation of White Jambhala. The original base indicates the intact interior.
